These days the increasing availability of computer-based courses have become a substitutefor the conventional classroom in several universities. From a personal point of view, although such development can have some potential drawbacks, the return is highly justifiable.
On the one hand, distance learning without regular face-to-face interaction with teachers in classroom seems to be negative to an extent. First of all, online courses could result in a generation of inactive students, as university campuses provide the environment for young people to develop many social skills such as inter-personal and teamwork capabilities. Besides, students attending those courses usually have a tendency to procrastinate doing their tasks. This, consequently, requires students to have intense concentration, self-discipline and time manage skill; otherwise, such method is likely to be ineffective.
On the other hand, there are several benefits which promote online education as
alternative of the traditional method. In the modern world, more people have to
juggle their work with their study. Therefore, Internet-based courses with great
flexibility in schedule and distance are likely to enable students to get access
to higher education. Secondly, universities could also benefit a lot from online
courses due to the fact that their courses tend to reach more students worldwide
with reduced investments. In fact, with geographic barriers removed,
and colleges could provide their great courses for more national and international students, thereby enhancing their image and attract more talented people.
In conclusion, despite some limitations of online courses, it should be considered as an essential step in education.
