The sites do not change.
Locals feel like they already know everything.
Locals find it unnecessary to spend a lot of money for museums and galleries.
Allow free or lower fee entrance for locals.
Body 1: Reasons
Unchanged sites -> locals feel that there is nothing new to learn -> low return rates
Local news and books heavily featured -> fail to trigger curiosity and interest
Museum visits are expensive -> discourage people with lower income
Body 2: Solutions
Add new statues or paintings -> evolve over time -> attract locals to come back for more
Free or lower fee entrance -> Ex. Uffizi Museum is updated annually and has free entrance dates.
Many museums and historical landmarks are able to appeal to large numbers of tourists but fail to achieve the same effect when it comes to locals. There are a number of causes to this, and a variety of solutions that can be used to tackle this problem.
A reason why some tourist attractions are not frequented by locals is that the sites themselves do not change over time. Locals may feel that there is nothing new to learn after their initial visit. Moreover, the fact that the attraction is heavily featured on local news and books adds to the thought that they already know enough about it. Furthermore, in countries with low income rates, locals may not be able to afford to visit expensive museums or historical sites. Meanwhile, those coming from other countries will have more disposable income which they can use to visit these places. Naturally, the composition of those visiting historical attractions would be skewed towards tourists.
Therefore, in order to attract more local people, famous places of interest should evolve over time. For instance, museums can add new statues or paintings to their collections. This attracts people in the area to visit more than once. Moreover, there should be a lower price for regional people, so the lack of money will be less of a disincentive for entry. For example, the Uffizi Gallery in England has their collection updated every year and has set specific days on which it will have free entrance for everyone to commemorate and honor special historical and traditional occasions. This has increased the number of visitors, especially those that are local.
In conclusion, I argue that museums and historical landmarks which do not attract local people are usually too expensive or unchanging. To remedy this, costs should be reduced for locals and new things should be added over a period of time.
