1. Từ vựng chủ đề celebrity Part 1

IELT

1.1 Do you like celebrities? Why/Why not?

Honestly speaking, I don’t take a keen interest in famous people’s lives simply because I consider it a waste of time. I mean these lives are pretty cool actually. That said, I reckon that focusing too much on other people’s lives, no matter who they are, offers limited benefits.

Vocabulary:

  • take a keen interest in something /tāk ə kēn ˈɪntrəst ɪn ˈsʌmθɪŋ/ : Hứng thú với điều gì đó.

Ex: She takes a keen interest in photography and spends a lot of time learning new techniques.

  • That said / With that being said /ðæt ˈsɛd/ wɪð ðæt ˈbiɪŋ ˈsɛd/: Dùng để tương phản với những gì đã được trình bày

Ex: I love going to the beach, that said, I also enjoy staying at home and reading a good book.

1.2 Who is your favourite celebrity in your country?

Gigi Hadid has clearly impressed not only myself but a number of other young people in recent months. She is our 2019 Miss International and will represent the United States at the Miss Universe pageant, which will be held in New York the same year. Following the beauty pageants, she became well-known for her exceptional beauty, great qualities, and professionalism.

Vocabulary:

  • Well-known /wɛl ˈnoʊn/: Nổi tiếng

Ex: He's a well-known actor in the industry, known for his exceptional acting skills.

  • Exceptional /ɪkˈsepʃənl/: Phi thường

Ex: Her performance was exceptional and she received a standing ovation from the audience.

  • Professionalism /prəˌfɛʃəˈnælɪzəm/: Sự chuyên nghiệp

Ex: His professionalism in the workplace is impressive and serves as an inspiration to his colleagues.

1.3 Do you like any foreign celebrities?

Sure. I'm going to talk about someone who has been my idol since I was a teenager: Selena Gomez. I suppose most people my age grew up watching Disney Channel, and Hannah Montana, starring Selena Gomez, was always at the top of my list. Despite the fact that she is now an adult, I am still a huge fan of her incredible voice and really moving songs.

Vocabulary:

  • Be a the top of the list /bi ət ðə ˈtɑp əv ðə ˈlɪst/: Đứng đầu trong danh sách

Ex: She wants to be at the top of the list for the next promotion, so she's been working hard to prove herself.

1.4 Would you like to be a celebrity? Why?

Though I've never considered it, I'm very confident that being a celebrity would never be one of my life objectives. I respect all of the efforts that celebrities, no matter what industry they work in, make every day. However, I feel as though I do not belong in that environment. After all, you never know what happens when the curtains close, do you? To be honest, I don't believe I want to be a public figure.

Vocabulary:

  • Life objectives /laɪf əˈbjɛktɪvz/ : Những mục tiêu trong cuộc sống

Ex: She has several life objectives, including traveling to different parts of the world and learning new languages.

  • Public figure /ˈpʌblɪk ˈfɪɡjʊr/ : Nhân vật công chúng.

Ex: She's become a public figure in the political arena, known for her exceptional leadership skills.

1.5 Why do people trust celebrities?

People trust celebrities because they often see them as role models and believe that they embody a certain image or lifestyle that they aspire to. Additionally, many celebrities have a large following and a lot of influence, so when they endorse a product or idea, people are more likely to trust it. This can sometimes be a double-edged sword, as celebrities can also negatively impact people's perceptions and opinions.

Vocabulary:

  • Role models /laɪf əˈbjɛktɪvz/ : hình mẫu

Ex: Many children look up to athletes as role models and aspire to follow in their footsteps.

  • Aspire [əˈspaɪər] : mong muốn

Ex: She aspired to become a successful entrepreneur and started her own business.

  • Endorse [ɛnˈdɔrs] : tán thành

Ex: The famous actor chose to endorse a brand that aligns with his values and beliefs.

1.6 Are well-known people obligated to aid the poor?

Well-known people are not necessarily obligated to aid the poor, but some choose to do so due to their wealth and influence, either through personal efforts or through charitable organizations. However, it is ultimately up to the individual to decide how they want to use their resources and impact the world around them.

Vocabulary:

  • Obligated [əˈblɪɡeɪtɪd] : có trách nhiệm

Ex: As a citizen, I feel obligated to vote in every election and make my voice heard.

  • Charitable [ˈtʃærɪtəbl] : từ thiện

Ex: The wealthy philanthropist made a large charitable donation to support education initiatives.

  • Ultimately [ˈʌltəmətli] : cuối cùng

Ex: It is ultimately up to the well-known individual to decide how they want to use their wealth and influence for charitable causes.

2. Part 2

2.1 Describe a lesson you learn from a celebrity.

Cong Vinh, a former striker for the Vietnamese national team, is my favorite Vietnamese footballer and a living monument in my opinion because of his unwavering dedication.

He has literally earned a reputation for being both skilled and a committed husband and father in the family. Despite his retirement from professional competition, he has continued to contribute to the advancement of football in Vietnam by undertaking coaching work and constructing a football center to attract fresh talent. When he was a member of the national football team, he and his teammates won the AFF Suzuki Cup several years ago, which took the country by storm and made headlines at the time.

Plus, he is recognized for his marriage to Thuy Tien, a well-known singer. They are real philanthropists who have collaborated on a lot of charity work that has benefited many people around the country. He is also admired for enjoying a simple and happy life, as seen by his daily Facebook updates on his family's activities. I hope he will continue to be a role model for people in our country and do good for many people.

Vocabulary:

  • a living monument: Một tượng đài sống

  • unwavering dedication: cống hiến không ngừng

  • Earn a reputation for something: Có tiếng vì điều gì đó

  • Committed (adj): Tận tuỵ

  • Undertake (v): Đảm nhiệm

  • Take something by storm (idiom): Làm mưa làm gió

  • Philanthropist (n): Nhà hảo tâm

  • A role model: Một tấm gương

3. Part 3

3.1 Do you think we should protect famous people’s privacy?

Indeed. As you can obviously guess, fans, anti-fans, and even non-fans are all eager about what their prejudice is doing these days. Some people are aggressive in the sense that they psychologically combat their bias by writing negative remarks online. Some, particularly the so-called paparazzi, approach them on the street. As a result, I firmly believe that certain restrictions should be put in place to safeguard celebrities' privacy.

Vocabulary:

3.2 How do celebrities influence their fans in your country?

Celebrities, in my opinion, have a large impact on their audience. It's natural to follow our biases and strive to emulate them. First and foremost, it might just be physical changes such as dress, haircut, or cosmetics. However, owing to social media, followers, and idols are now a lot closer. It's sometimes just a status away. However, this mental link is a double-edged sword, implying that the idols should be extra cautious about their lifestyle or manners.

Vocabulary:

  • Strive (v): Cố gắng hết sức

  • Emulate (v): Bắt chước, làm theo

  • Cosmetics (n): Mĩ phẩm

  • double-edged sword: Con dao hai lưỡi

  • Cautious (adj): Cẩn trọng

  • Manner (n): Cử chỉ

3.3 Do you think there is such a thing as bad publicity?

The term “publicity” suggests that even negative attention can be beneficial for someone or something. However, this may not always be the case, as negative publicity can potentially harm one's reputation and lead to negative consequences such as loss of endorsement deals or decreased public trust. It ultimately depends on the specific context and the individual's response to the negative attention. Additionally, in certain situations, negative publicity can have long-term effects that cannot be easily undone.

3.4 Are there any differences between famous people now and in the past?

Famous people in the past often had a larger sense of privacy, with limited access to their personal lives. In the past, fame was more of a result of one's talent or abilities, rather than the level of notoriety they had on social media. In the past, there was a more clear distinction between a public and private persona, while today's celebrities often blur the lines between their personal and public lives. The amount of media attention and scrutiny famous people receive today has also increased compared to the past.
