It is argued that expenditure should go to roads and motorways rather than public transport systems. I believe both roads and public transport systems play a crucial role in the modern society, and thus, should receive equal amounts of investment.

Better road quality offers great benefits: increasing the safety level and reducing traffic jams. It is reported that many accidents happen due to lack of adequate road infrastructure. In particular, in Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam and Thailand, there is clear evidence of infrastructure deficit, which suggests that the government’s spending be used to improve the quality of road systems in order to ensure the people’s safety. In addition, wider roads and a larger number of motorways can lessen the congestion in overpopulated areas such as Ho Chi Minh City or Bangkok where vehicles are stuck on the street for up to 4 hours during rush hour.

On the other hand, improving the bus, train, and underground systems helps protect the environment and benefits people who do not possess a private vehicle. A bus can carry 20 people at once, which means there 20 vehicles less on the streets, leading to a reduction in carbon emission. For example, it is reported that the air quality in Vietnam is only 19% compared to 65% in Singapore, where the public transportation is the main mode of transport. Furthermore, for those who do not have a private vehicle, especially immigrants in big cities, buses and subways are the solution to their everyday travel. This can be seen in Ho Chi Minh City, where there are hundreds of thousands of immigrants who travel by bus daily.

In short, governments should pay attention to both improving roads and motorways and public transport systems due to their equally critical importance.
